Southwest Virginia Higher Education Center
The Southwest Virginia Higher Education Center (SVHEC) is located in Abingdon, Virginia and is a consortium of ten institutes of higher education within the state of Virginia, which provides undergraduate and graduate degree programs and professional development courses at this satellite facility. Collaborating with Train & Partners Architects from Charlottesville, Virginia, a building addition was undertaken to highlight the main building entrance and expand classroom space. The associated landscape spaces were designed to reflect the goals of the architectural extension, as well as assist in the project obtaining a LEED Gold certification. Bold, broad gestures of layered plant materials give the facility a unique, iconic appearance. Through a careful selection of native and drought tolerant plantings, the landscape provides seasonal interest with low maintenance requirements and without the need for supplemental irrigation.
