Lake House Retreat

A major renovation of a small, desolate house above South Holston Lake was transformed into a weekend retreat for a busy family of six. With grade changes and steep drops down to the lake, the safety of the children was of paramount importance when designing exterior spaces. Using natural stone walls with bluestone coping, parking spaces were created at the front of the house, in conjunction with a wide, accommodating staircase that invites visitors down into the house and garden. An elevated outdoor living space was created as an extension of the family room, and features a stone fireplace and outdoor kitchen. The plantings are designed to be seasonal, low-maintenance, and of a primarily native palette to blend in with the adjacent woodlands, all the while maximizing open space for play.
