Jade Woods Forest Retreat

Perched atop a wooded ridge, sits a private retreat immersed in the beauty of a mature hardwood forest. As such, each of the landscape interventions sought to highlight the natural beauty and exist in harmony with the present ecosystem. A major home renovation, in combination with landscape improvements and the creation of outdoor living spaces, provided the clients with their own mountain retreat. At the main level of the house, Tennessee sandstone slabs, set in grassed joints, form permeable walkways and patios that extend the main entrance into the arrival court. Natural stepping stone steps connect the arrival garden to the lower gardens, where a stone retaining wall forms the backbone to two gathering areas. A unique ‘curtain’ fountain and stone fire pit are the centerpieces of the main gathering space for the family. Native plantings seamlessly tie the garden spaces together and provide year-round interest, both visually and as beneficial wildlife habitat.
